The timeless growth of Urban green in the city
The protection and increase of the Urban Green as an integral part of the city and the quality of life of the inhabitants, is a primary obligation.
The Green service, through its cooperation with the Technical Services of the Municipality in the last 17 years has increased the Urban Green of our city by 60%.
This is proven by detailed measurements that have been made according to which in the year 2000 the Urban Green of our city had an area of 105,000 m2 (95,000 m2 from Public Green Areas + 10,000,000 m2. the year 2017 has 168,052 m2. (152,052 m2from Public Green Areas + 16,000 m2from 8,000 trees in rows of trees).
Taking into account the population of the city of Heraklion in the years 2000 (130,914 people) and the year 2017 (140,730 people) the ratio of green per inhabitant was 0.8 m2/ Inhabitant and 1.2 m2/ Inhabitant respectively.
If in the above areas of Urban Green we add the 200,000 m2green of the Venetian Walls then the ratio amounts to 2.6 m2 / Inhabitant.
Our goal is to increase the m2 / Inhabitant according to the European standards of Mediterranean cities but also with the possibilities provided by the urban planning of the city.
