From the beginning of the year, all citizens will have access to the 960 paintings of the Municipality of Heraklion, which bear the seal of Tsarouchis, Moralis, Fasianos, Gaitis Vassilios and Spyropoulos, with one “click”. In the hands of the Municipality of Heraklion is already in digitized form all the material of the paintings which composes the electronic gallery of Loggia which became a practice through the cooperation of the Municipality of Heraklion with ITE.
According to the existing plan, within the next month the electronic gallery of the Municipality of Heraklion is expected to be posted on a website of the Municipality which will include in digitized form all the paintings of the Municipality of Heraklion.
“This is a pioneering project at a pan-Cretan level as far as we know”, emphasizes the Deputy Mayor of Culture, Mrs. Aristea Plevri, who highlights the essential interest of the Municipal Authority in the direction of utilizing the great works of art of the Municipality of Heraklion, which until now had never been exploited in a structured way.
As he explains, the whole project of the digitization of the paintings was launched by the municipal authority in collaboration with the Institute of Technology and Research. At the same time, however, it continued with the help of art historian of the University of Crete Dr. Deniz Chloe Alevizou the documentation of the paintings that includes the biography of the author, comments on the paintings and the approach of the time period that were created.
This practically means that all the elements that compose the identity of the work of art have been recorded, such as who is its creator, when he created the painting, what is the artistic value of the work. All these elements will be used in a way to create a database that will summarize all the works of art that are property of Municipality of Heraklion.
The electronic gallery at the beginning of the year will be included in the website of the Municipality of Heraklion and so any computer user will be able to travel to the works of art of the Municipality, which will be seen one by one along with all the necessary accompanying elements of each work and the artist who created it.
As the Deputy Mayor of Culture, Aristea Plevri, points out, at the same time the Municipality of Heraklion is launching the museological study that requires the approval of the Ministry of Culture, which will still have to approve the entire file for the restoration of the historic building Kothri, in which the municipal gallery of the Municipality of Heraklion will be prospectively installed.
