Heraklion in the 100 Intelligent cities in Europe

18 Sep, 2020

Following an evaluation process, Heraklion was included in the list of the Intelligent cities Challenge network.

From 27 February to 29 May, the Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC) received 131 expressions of interest from 193 cities in 20 countries in the European Union and the United Kingdom. The European Commission and the ICC team were very pleased to see that so many cities are enthusiastic to become more sustainable and socially responsible using advanced technologies.

After careful discussion, 90 applications have now been selected to participate in the Challenge for the next 2 years. This group includes 54 new ICC applications, 26 cities participating in the Digital Cities Challenge initiative and 9 EU mentor cities. Nine more international cities are selected to complete the list of the 100 cities that will take part in the ICC trip. As 8 from the applicants are consortia, including many partner cities, the selected group of cities includes a total of 126 cities.

The selected key cities will receive high quality and customized guidance. They will take part in group trainings, learn from classmates, participate in a series of high-level events and plan collectively for big changes. In this way, they will utilize advanced technologies to achieve green, smart and sustainable development.
