Electronic Navigation System in the old town of Heraklion
The project “Heraklion, every step… a journey into history” Electronic Tour of the Old Town of Heraklion” was implemented by the Municipality of Heraklion in the framework of the Operational Program “Crete & Aegean Islands” of the program period “National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) 2007-2013” with the co-financing of the European Union (European Regional Development Fund).
The city of Heraklion is shown through historical routes, sights, photographic material and texts about its history.
Through about 1850 fully documented photographs, 250 texts of archival material (of the Venetian – Ottoman period, the period of the Cretan State up to newspapers of the beginning of the 20th century), 250 pages of A4 original texts, 45-minute historical videos, the history of Heraklion unfolds in 7 sections: audio and narration: the History, the Space, the Tradition, the Chronology, the Tour, the… “I was there”, the Icons and finally the “like today”.
The project has a budget of € 150,000, was implemented by the Multimedia Laboratory of the University of Crete while it was controlled and monitored by the Department of Informatics and the Old Town Department of the Municipality of Heraklion. The project with the general title “Electronic tour in the old city of Heraklion” was presented on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 in the Hall of the Municipal Council by the Municipality of Heraklion.
The visitor is guided and obtains multilevel and varied information about the history of the city and its cultural heritage such as monuments, historical sites, museums, buildings, etc.
Equally important is the fact that a digital content base was created, consisting of iconographic and archival material that can be continuously enriched at the initiative of the Municipality and other bodies and aims to develop a more complete and documented history of our city not only for today but also for tomorrow.
